I have not really done much fishing over the last few years, so when a opportunity came up for a free week on the North Lake and Conor having some time off for his Birthday from
Sunday evening for 5 days. Although my days/hours were limited. We wanted to do a bit of a video blog, but with the bad weather we didn’t do all we wanted to but I’m sure Conor has enough bits to put a short film together.
The weather was pretty pants on and off all week with strong winds and driving rain. We even had a tree come down on the back side of the lake.

We’ve had moody fish, naturals, fry, tadpoles, baby frogs, bloodworm and everything else that was hatching, it seemed like everything that swims in the lake was against us.
The fish were hard to locate with not a lot of signs either. Both of us spent countless hours watching for signs on the lake,  we both decided to fish our own styles and change things around. Even Simons lake was fishing hard for Paul and Harvey only banking 4 fish before they left mid week to get ready for their family holiday but they did have a fantastic week on North lake with 32 fish the previous week.
I decided to go with really heavily baited spots  topped up with a full baitboat each time the rods went out. Conor stuck to his own baitboat tight in to spots where we were seeing signs of fish. Conor struck in quick with 2 fish including a stunning linear.
I wasn’t around all day from Monday 7am until the evening due to a appointment. So the rods went back out later that evening.
Tuesday morning I had my first fish which was a really nice 30lb mirror followed, later that evening after putting the rods back out I had 50lb Grassy.
Wednesday morning I hooked in to something special with a lot of weight behind it, slow plodding, zig zagging across the lake, until I got the fish infront of me to the drop of shelf, where the fish decided to make hard deep lunges and strip multiple yardage of line from me time and time again. They spook off these shelves every time you try to bring them up, the only thing to do is keep a loose clutch and let them have line when they want it. After a really good 35 minute fight Conor slipped the net under a huge fish. Karen was also present and shot a video. Weight confirmed 60lb, over the moon.
Rod back out to the same spot, rain continued for the rest of the day and just into dark the same rod was off again.
After the battle I had earlier in the day this fish also felt heavy, with my rod bent all the way over it also had ideas of its own, shaking his head and trying to take me all over the lake heading anywhere he could snag me.
Again after another long hard battle Conor slipped the net under another massive fish, rolling the net down and slipping into a sling. It took both of us to lift and carry to the cradle. We were both in awe when we saw the size of the fish after uncovering. We quickly zeroed the sling and weighed the fish. The rain got heavy and we quickly read the scales at 65lb but looking back at the video and pictures it actually read 65.08lb!
A brace of 60s again in a day I was over the moon.
Thursday we had another wet windy day and had some heavy rain and hail, but as soon as it stopped I managed a 30lb mirror, shortly followed by a almighty crash and a screaming take. This fish again taking me across the back of the lake, it was like the scene out of Jaws lol. Clever fish, this one just kept sitting and holding up, every time I made a bit of line he took it back and some more, after 30 mins or so battle I finally had him in front of me but the fish had othe ideas and decided he was not done and decided to head off again and again. The fish fought like a beast, flat rodding me, taking yards of line every run, time after time. 40 odd minutes later and I was broken but the fish still was fighting fit. That was the hardest fighting fish in 40 years of carp fishing I have ever had.
We finally got him in and Conor turned and looked at me and said that’s another 60+.
After 10 mins of revival THAT WAS FOR ME LOL we sorted the fish out and the weight came in at 63lb it was just biblical that I had just done a trio of sixties. I am still ecstatic as I sit and write this and wonder if I will ever achieve anything like this again .
As we were packing up early on Friday morning in the wet miserable weather Conor manged to land two new personal best grass carp at 50lb and 53.08lb.
For such a short session, harsh conditions, fish not really playing ball, overall I think myself and Conor did really well, we certainly worked for them.
Thankyou to my son Conor it was fantastic to share this memorable session with you, certainly cannot wait until the next one even though they broke me to bits lol x
